| 0111 : Jack LaLanne's Death at 96 Impacts the Fitness Community |
|

|
Jack LaLanne, fitness guru, passed away at the age of 96. According to cnn.com, the cause of death was pneumonia. As CNN notes:
"From the 1950s through the 1980s, LaLanne performed multiple feats of strength and endurance. He also came up with the idea of opening health spas and gyms."
LaLanne taught me three special things about fitness. They are juicing, use what you have to exercise any time, and weight training can be done by anyone.
Juicing
According to thestate.com, "LaLanne's career in the 1980's was reduced to doing infomercials for juicers and lectures." I saw many of these infomercials and I have to say they really opened my eyes to using a juicer to make my own fruit and vegetable juices. As a parent, I often think that buying a juicer is a waste of money. Buying a lot of fruits and vegetables every week to make juice when I can buy a few cartons of juice on sale seemed like a bad financial move.
However, there are many great health benefits to making your own fresh juice that many people, including me, overlooked. Giving my kids fresh fruits and veggies every day to drink has allowed me to give them more fruits and veggies without the additional sugar that many juice companies add to their products.
Use What You Have to Exercise Anytime
Many people do not exercise because they cannot afford the fitness equipment or the cost of a gym membership. LaLanne inspired me to find and use simple things around my home to exercise. For example, I use the vacuum to burn calories. I use dumbbells at my desk when I am working to gain upper body strength. I do squats with a kitchen chair and I love it. I am a very financially savvy person, so I like how creative this makes me.
Weight Training Can Be Done By Anyone
According to thestate.com, "he designed many now-familiar exercise machines, including leg extension machines and cable-pulley weights. And he proposed the then-radical idea that women, the elderly and even the disabled should work out to retain strength."
As a woman, many people expect me to be weak. In school, boys and girls always had different fitness requirements for everything. I now do weight training three times a week because I want to have as much strength as possible, especially when I pick up my children, which can be a difficult thing to do. I am very petite but LaLanne's advice to strength train has showed me that I need to keep making it a priority.
